Both shows take place in about the same time period (early 20th century for FMA, late 19th century for D. Gray-man) in Europe in a world similar to our own.  They are both about unique abilities, with an organization of alchemists in FMA and an organization of exorcists in D. Gray-man.  They are Shounen as well as some comedy mixed in and are both very enjoyable to watch.

Similar style of storytelling. Black Order kinda like State Alchemists etc. Both Ed and Allen have arms that aren't their original arms.

Both series are about someone who tried to bring someone important to them back to life… and failed. Allen Walker (D.Gray-Man) was cursed and Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) lost his right arm and left leg, which could be considered a curse. After that they both joined an organisation. Allen Walker = Black Order; Edward Elric = State Military. They both seem to have a cranky teacher (sensei). 

Last but not least; they are both short… ^^

The main characters both seem similar and their beliefs are also similar. The excitement of the plot and the action are very the same. Both animes share the same excitement and it will be a very nice experience.

 Young heroes whose childhoods are marked by tragic events, their limbs altered to become weapons, fighting to redress an error in their past: these are the main elements that tie Fullmetal Alchemist and D. Gray-man together. Plus, both series draw a world that resembles ours with some crucial differences, deliberately dabbling in anachronisms. Both have a focus on action that does not hinder character development, allowing for doses of humour to lighten up the mood.

Both have main characters with arms that functions as weapons. Both characters' childhoods featured a tragic loss for them, and the retribution they faced for trying to bring back the people they lost taint them to this very day.

The main characters of each of these shows end up losing someone who is very precious to them, changing their destiny in the process. Also, they both have unique arms due to those events.

Firstly, both main characters have some sort of abilities (Ed - alchemist, Allen - Exorcist), they are both nicknamed as "short" and both hate being called that.  Secondly, both series features the main character being part of an organisation/order (Ed - State Alchemist, Allen - Black Order), fighting against an opposing group of enemies (Ed - Homunculi, Allen - Noah).  Thirdly, both series have a lot of action and fighting scenes, bound to keep you entertained.

Allen Walker is like a mix between Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. He has Edward headstrong personality with Al's compassion. He even looks like them (just with gray hair and slightly older). He also has a messed up arm like Ed.  The Black Order is very reminiscent of the National Alchemists organization. 

Any Fullmetal Alchemist fan would love D.Gray-man. The characters are similar, the themes are similar. The difference is that D.Gray-man is going to be a long anime and the storyline is slightly different. A must watch!

Now i know that people might ask why even bother? But i i thought that someone new to anime  might need some help. Now the connection from FMA to D.Gray Man might be easy to see (they both have a messed up arm). All of the connections are not so cut and dry. Ed and Allen are very similar. first of all they carry a huge wait on their shoulders and they hate being called names. there are other similarities but they might ruin the surprise.

These two anime are so similar it's scary.  I've avoided watching D Gray Man before because it looked too much like any other generic shonen, but only 10 episodes in and it hooked me good.  If you liked Fullmetal, don't hesitate to give it's darker sibling D Gray a try.

Well, for starters both these titles are the shounen, action-packed with PG-13 violence type. And there's a really obvious similarity between the main characters in these two shows--both have 'the arm'. That's right, if Allen Walker has his Anti-akuma weapon arm, then Edward Elric has his mechanical arm. Speaking of characters, both titles have unique variation among their character and you never get tired of them. What I mean is that in FMA, the Alchemists had different abilities same with the Exorcists in DGM. Each of the characters had their own way in contributing to the unfolding of the plot--which makes the plot (for both anime shows) really unpredictable, thus exciting.  So, if you're life has been dull and you've been craving for some action, then go watch these two shows. They both left me with no regrets and they were definitely not a waste time for me.  read more

Let's see, both Edward Elric and Allen Walker tried to bring the dead to life with devastating consequences.  Besides that, they joined a military organization and look their arms!!  One has a metal arm the other has a..unique arm which doubles as a weapon.  Both are really young.  Oh, both Ed and Allen has lazy/cracky superiors (Roy and Komui) too.

Alchemist organization is familar to Black Order imo. Main charas- Ed and All are short teenagers-ppl make fun of their height lol. both of dem has unusuall arms and they fight because of  paren's loss.

Both protagonists turn one of their loved ones into a monstrous creature. Both Edward from FMA and Allen from DGM have an arm that is not normal. Also both stories revolves around looking for precious stones.

Both of these animes have been compared in the past and for good reason too.  D. Gray Man and Full Metal Alchemist both have a strong main character with a sad, messed up past but even so, they gain strength from this.  Both Edward and Allen are going for a goal and to do so, they must overcome many scary, supernatural challenges.  Edward has to might the Homunculus while Allen has to fight demons/akuma, the Noah, and the Millenium Earl.  Both shows are on my top 5...this is my recommendation for both D. Gray Man fans who have yet to see Full Metal Alchemist and also for Full Metal Alchemist fans who haven't seen D. Gray Man.  *note* D. Gray Man starts off slow, but, it will get REALLY good really fast after that. read more

CREEPY similar. First...
1)Edward/Allen suffer consequences for trying to bring dead back to life. 
2)Both have teachers they are afraid of: Izumi/Cross (Hm, I wonder what would happen if they met each other? XD)
3) Komui reminds me of Hughes, what with his attitude to family members. 
4) Edward/Allen both have special arms. 
5) Noah family is like the homunculi; the way they just kind of come as collectibles ^^ Oh, and I believe there are seven Noah/Homunculi? 
6) Lenalee kind of like Winry- aka romantic tention between her and the hero. 
7) Dark Order similar to State Alchemists- most of their members are pretty young and what they do serves the community. 
8) Exorcists=Alchemists- although not every alchemist is in State, they're both "selective practices", per se. 
9) Milliennium Earl could be a personification of "the Gate".
10) And last but not least, the mangas were published in the same year. 0.0

Both shows are about 15 year old main characters with a fake arm and a tendency to be referred to as "beansprout".  They both take place in the 1800's, though D.Gray-man has a more gothic feel.  If Fullmetal Alchemist and Tim Burton had a lovechild, it would be D.Gray-man.

The main characters are both child prodigies, excelling in combat and hiding a mysterious past. Edward Elric joins up with the Military of Amestris, while Allen Walker joins the Dark Religious Organization. Both series include comedy at some times as well as blood and death at others. They can be shockingly similar to each other in some ways, while being different enough that they each have a unique flavor.

Basically, FMA with Alphonse as the main character in place of Ed.
Alan is a sweet, mellow, trusting boy with life experiences behind him and supernatural abilities, all at the age of 15.
He knows of stuff the average person is unaware of and fights to combat this.

As stated, his personality is similar to that of Alphonse FMA, quiet and submissive.
The reason I compare these series together is down to them being so similar:
- Victorian era
- Child fighter
- Conspiracies
- Drifting
- Ed's automail arm and Alan's demonic arm
- Supernatural abilities
- Troubled past

Both Series take place in the age of where Technology isn't develop very far yet, though D.Grayman takes place in the early 18th century as both main characters are short and hate being called short or rather hate being called Bean Sprout, join Allen Walker as he joins a organization that is similar to a army of special people called Exorcists much like State alchemists, as the organization known as the Black Order tries to defeat a rise of the supernatural army as Allen like Edward has a traumatizing past that follows him wherever he goes as its literally on him reminding him of his past. as he tries to find the way to stop the demons known as Akumas from taking over and destroying human kind read more

Very similar feel. Both have a setting with the feel of Industrial Revolution England. Both protagonists have a dark past that led to deformations/enhancements to their bodies. Both join organizations designed for people with special abilities to maintain order. They also have similar art styles, though D.Gray-Man is a little more "realistic."

Both are similar because both have to do with a young teenage boy fighting enemies with one arm that isn't normal. Also both boys have a power that everyone doesn't.

First Of all Full Metal Alchemist has Edward Elric wanting to become a state alchemist this is similar to D.Gray-man because the character Allen Walker wants to become part of the "black order" Edward has a auto mail arm which can be formed into different shapes such as a sword. As in D.Gray-man Allen has a possessed arm which can form into different objects to like a gun, sword and all other range of weapons.

Both shows feature alchemy, though each has it's own take on what alchemy really is. Many might not find Busou Renkin quite up to par with Fullmetal Alchemist, but both shows are great in their own ways.

Nobuhiro Watsuki's newest anime is more like fullmetal then Rurouni Kenshin. Kazuki Mutou and Tokiko Tsumura fight homunculi with alchemic weapons. If you loved Rurouni Kenshin or Full metal alchemist then this is a must see

Both animes center around alchemy. alchemy is portrayed and used differently and each show has its own ideas of what alchemy really is but the basics are very similar. in Busou Renkin alchemy is more secretive while in Full Metal Alchemist it is a well known power that is used by a special branch of the military. Full Metal Alchemist also has Homunculi which are basically the same in each anime besides how they were created. FMA is one of my favorites but they are both very good. if you like Busou Renkin then you will love FMA.

They both involve humunculi and alchemy, but Busou has a different setting being modern Japan. The main character loses his life at the beginning and must  live off a metal object which gives him powers.

The story may not be as epic or on list of popularity like FMA, but if you want more alchemist vs humunculi, this one might do it. Did I mention the mentor is a dork? and it can be very strange for enemies, don't expect anything normal from those guys.

The series are actually very different. In comparison to FMA, in Busou Renkin you can actually bring dead to life.
However, both series use Alchemy as a fighting power and their enemies are homonculus. So if you simply want to see different version of Alchemy, feel free to check any of those shows.

Similar themes, such as alchemy, and the time era. Though the style it's shown in is quite different, as well as FMA having a main character (as opposed to Baccano), they're still similar in many ways. Both having a wide range of characters, violence, and nicely animated action.

Baccano! is a very intense anime when it comes down to the basic story line as FMA, both are about alchemy and what power can do to human's with greed in their hearts.

Both of these series are set around the early 1900's. The practice of alchemy is within them both, however one more so than the other (Fullmetal Alchemist). Also the idealogy of immortality is brought up quite a bit in both. They may not be eerily similar, but they do have a similarity in overall feeling.

I found Soul Eater to have the same atmosphere as FMA. There are some episodes that are hilarious, and some that are just creepy. There's great character development in both of these along with epic fighting. The first few episodes are the intro, and then the story takes off afterwords. The art work is amazing (at least in HD) It's dark, comic, 3d, 2d in a 3d environment, and colorful. I'd say the main difference is that Soul Eater isn't as depressing. Both of them are great series to watch.

Both animes contain a lot of action, comedy, and something that the characters strive for, which is unrevealed until later in the story. i love both of these animes. perfect for people who like action and adventure. also, both have protagonists about the same age, relatively young, as Edward in FMA starts as 12, then the story moves forward to when he's 15 and Alphonse is 14. They gradually age, making note several times in the anime and once in the movie. Unique to Soul Eater, however, is the almost comical reference to witches, etc. and the fact that the characters themselves become weapons (though it depends on how you look at it, as Edward's automail arm can be considered a weapon as well as part of him/his body.) read more

Two of Square Enix's greatest shows and were also, along with Eureka 7, the first series to run for 51 episodes.

They both create the perfect balance between a gripping storyline, epic fights and appropriately used light-hearted humour. Each shows a great amount of character depth and growth and they both use characters with their own personalised fighting styles (eg. different types of alchemy and different kinds of weapon partners). 

Also if you watch the dub you'll recognise a lot of Funimation's top voice actors in both. If you liked one of these I would highly recommend the other - they're both addictive!

while watching these i noticed that if you remove all the humor in them, they become seriously f*cked up, evil and sadistic, but they're both great anime and and the humor in these two is hilarious! the characters are very unique and awesome and the plot is great, although i was kinda disappointed with the ending of soul eater.

Both are fantasy anime which have a very large cast of characters. They both also run for the same amount of episodes (51). They both also have an ending that is only for the anime. The difference is Soul Eater has a comedic tone, while Fullmetal Alchemist has a dramatic tone.

If you like Fullmetal Alchemist, DEFINITELY check out Soul Eater. It was made by the same studio, Bones, so the animation is gorgeous. At least I think so. (I might be kinda biased, Studio Bones is easily my favorite anime studio.) The stories are pretty different from eachother, but the characters in both series are incredibly likable, and both have really awesome fight scenes. They're also both way shorter than your average shounen anime, and they avoid a lot of the annoyingly overused tropes in the genre.

First versions of a shounen manga serialized in Shounen Gangan. Adapted by Bones with 51 episodes each. Both have original endings, but FMA was adapted again after the manga ended.

These anime seem basically identical to me, for the following reasons:
- Both focus on a tragic story between blonde brothers, in which one of them is trying to take the other back as he was before;
- They share the same overused genres (action, drama, supernatural) and the same type of silly, unfunny, cliché comedy;
- Both involve a military/religious organization that recruites "soldiers" to fight against the evil guys;
- Both Edward and Rosette can be really polemic, combative, loud, and irritating.
To sum it up, these anime have very similar characters, plot, mood, and style.

Both animation have blood , wars , guns ,blonde charecters, good and evil or goood vs. evil. villlans , demons , a 1900 time line(or the same period of time). Both main charecters lost their parents and a brother.

There's definitely a lot of things that made both of these anime's alike. It kind of has the same atmosphere, there's lots of comedy and at the same time things are taken seriously when they should be.

They both have to do with a pair of siblings who lost their parents and one of the two happens to get injured in some type of way. As for the other sibling, he/she is trying to protect them by doing anything possible.

Both of the protagonists are full of joy and always seem to be energetic and willing to learn more about the world and its secrets. At the same time they refuse to show their sad side to others. They also like to make a big deal of things and fight back when people talk about them.

There's fighting scenes and lots of action, and twistt~ Overall, very enjoyable to watch :D read more

Both series revolve around a pair of main characters with dark backstories who joined a faction with the primary objective of searching for something that was taken away from them. They also have a fair share of religious themes and symbolism, although Chrno Crusade is considerably heavier in that department, and the endings to both series pass on a harsh message. Also, both adapt their manga counterparts with some liberties in the first half, then diverge into anime-only territory later.

These two series are very similar as to how the story is portrayed. Both are phycological and twisted in the same ways, you never know what's going on and the story keeps building up and putting things together. 
FMA is full of humor and it can even pop up  in the middle of a serious moment.
Evangelion has ecchi humor that appears in its own time.
And they both are considered one of the best anime.

While most people will probably disagree with me that these two shows are similar, I believe that if you really liked FMA, NGE is definitely to watch.

In my opinion, the one thing FMA is really praiseworthy for is the oddness of its ending (whoa!) and of the concepts it deals with (sometimes odd). NGE is in the same way very peculiar and sometimes hard to grasp, hence why I am  recommending it. 

I personally do not normally like anime that goes 50 + episodes, as I fear (on good reason) that my time will be wasted with fillers. Both NGE and FMA don't seem to me to be time-wasting shows, as they allow the viewer to really *think* about what's going on (something which most anime, unfortunately, fails to do...)

The leading characteristic that I compare Evangelion to FMA by is the plot structure. Both have plot elements that follow directly from the preceding elements as well as an overarching goal that is foreshadowed either by being stated or implied. I'm a fan of both to a great degree and i recognize the similar elements between both. Happy viewing

There's a lot of similarity going on here:

Ed/Shinji's relationship with their father and deceased mom
Lt. Ross and Brosh look similar to Shigeru and Maya
Makoto and Kain look very much alike and are both trustworthy
Sheska and Ritsuko both look similar but one is geared towards books 
Both have something going on in the military/NERV
Both have supernatural beings such as Homunculus/Angels

Both are both amazing must watch anime series that you won't want to miss!

Keep in mind this is FMA the much darker anime not FMAB.The  
reason I think FMA and NGE are similar is purely psychological and philosophical.Both anime deal with despair and depression.Both explore topics as dealing with hopelessness and no matter how harsh the reality is you must try hard to earn peace.FMA and NGE also teach us that the twisted truth of the world is not something we can grasp so we must always have our own truths to keep us away from falling further into the pits of despair.

I'm an addict for series that follow a pair of brothers. For me Ao no Exorcist and FMA fall in the same category. Hot headed older brother, check. Reasonable, level headed younger brother, check. Supernatural elements, check. You could basically exchange the Exorcists for Alchemists, alchemy for magic, and homunculi for demons and have a pretty close to the same type of story. And did I mention the brothers and lots of brotherly love, angst, family bonding moments in both? I've made my point. Though not like anyone whose watched Ao no Exorcist will have not watch FMA. Seriously if you haven't you really shouldn't call yourself an anime fan. AnE though good the anime will never come close to comparing to either series of FMA.  read more

Well this is not obvious but the sensation I had watching ao no exorcist reminds me of Fullmetal alchemist. The story of 2 brothers, one got power and is reclkess, the other one is strong and wiser. they join an organisation that is full of rules and will fight with AND against it. The story really is differents but there is a little something that is alike, don't know why but i'm sure if you liked FMA, you'll definitely like ao no exorcist.

both anime have two brothers who are very different, and both fight for a greater goal, and also the main character is really funny but also serious, a lot of times he reminded me of edward. many times i've said alchemists instead of exorcists, and the fight scenes are so awesomly smililar but at the same time different. 

if you loved fma you will definitely love ao no exorcist, it just has the same kind of feel to it.

They main characters are two brothers. Ed is like Rin (hot-headed older brother) and Al is like Yukio (calm younger brother). Both have lots of comedy and feels too.

There are many similar characters, eg. Winry and Shiemi, Hohenheim and Fujimoto.

 Neither of them follow the original manga story but they're still worth a watch (make sure you read the manga too though (there is also another version of FMA).

If you liked Fullmetal Alchemist, then you might also like Code Geass because of the genres that are similar to both animes. They both deal with the male protagonist having to deal with the military, fantasy like mecha items and tons of action involved. And the best part in my opinion is that there really aren't many fillers in these animes so it makes it worth watching =]

after picking up FMA, it's difficult in finding an anime with such a riveting storyline and appealing characters. Naruto was the series managed to satisfy a new anime craze for me. Admittingly enough the story is not as tight as FMA, there is somethign about the series which draws you in and it's worth picking up

with an interesting plot and surprising twists, it's a perfect anime for someone who likes a lengthy story... although it is not for the faint hearted with a few bloodied scenes.
the story starts with a confusing scene that draws the viewer in, and it explains the characters lives at an understandable pace... definitely an anime that makes you care about the characters enough that you want to shout at them to get up if they get knocked down... 
very much the way Naruto makes you feel. (at least, it makes me feel that way!)
it not just that though... this anime is laced with Japanese folklore for people who like stories with a bit of truth in them. That is... a bit anyway...
however, this is not the reason I chose to continue watching this anime. I actually love the lessons they knock into you e.g. "those who abandon their mission are scum, but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum"- Hatake Kakashi read more

Both fairly known Animes, character focus, and a lot of action. If you're getting into anime from Naruto, I'd suggest Full Metal Alchemist. Not only for the action, for the love, comedy, and general mood of it.

Both "Naruto" and "Fullmetal Alchemist" are series that easily are classified as mere fighting animes. In both cases I would disagree with the "mere"-part. Both of these animes have plenty of fights, but the also have the ability to go deeper in a way that will make them appreciated not only by adolescents, but by adults as well, and as such they both represent the cream of the crop of fighting anime.

Perhaps it's the distinctive blue uniforms and mixed public attitude towards a prominent government agency that early episodes portray the main characters trying, and eventually succeeding, to join, each for their own personal motivations - but Tegami Bachi gives me the same sort of vibe that the earlier episodes of FMA did.  Either way, both are good, not-too-ridiculously-long series with a shounen bent that can still be enjoyed by members of both genders.  Both feature unique fantasy settings derived from similar real life time periods, as well as extensive travel through these places as part of the plot, delving into the lives of characters met along the way.  And come to think of it, Lag's Spirit Amber does look a teensy bit like a Philosopher's Stone.... read more

Both feature quests for undoing what was done. For Fullmetal Alchemist, the journey is that of recovering what was lost; for the protagonist of Monster, it is to end a life mistakenly saved. Although their plots diverge a fair bit, the overall feel is similar. There is great optimism and philanthropy in both, and although FMA has more levity to it, they contain a similar balance of tragedy and happiness.

They are both works of immense quality and dedication, similar in length and pacing, with an extensive cast and great characterization. 10/10 for both.

There's a lot of action! and a lot of fighting scenes. Has to do with 2 seperate worlds. Human vs. Fantasy.

Main character has a close person thats almost always with them. Kagome / Inuyasha and Al / Edward. Both of the main characters are looking for something/items. On their adventures they make friends that help them along the way, and of course enemies which they are determined to defeat. At the same time they're making sure to keep their loved ones close, and take risks for one another.

Pumpkin Scissors addpermalink

I kind of like to describe Pumpkin Scissors as FMA without the alchemy.  I think it's a really underrated series that should be taken a closer look at.  Both series are very enjoyable to watch in my opinion, and they also have very similar military themes.  Their worlds are pretty close in terms of technology as well.  If you enjoyed watching FMA, then I think you'd enjoy Pumpkin Scissors since it does have a certain charm to it.  Although I have to add, the ending for this series might let you down.

If you like fullmetal alchemist then I promise u will get stuck through every episode of this anime.  Just like fullmetal alchemist, characters are well developed and there are no fillers.  In fma we have Chimeras and in blood+ Chiropterans. Chiropterans are undead monster with the ability to disguise themselves as human. They live by feeding on peoples' blood. There is a secret organization called the Red Shield that exists to hunt down the Chiropterans.

The theme of everlasting brotherhood: brothers that would willingly die for each other. Brings a tear to my manly eyes, it does. 

Two brothers - more emotional older; calmer, more rational younger duos - travel together in search of what they have lost, knowing full well the price of what they can never get back. The mothers of both duos died when they were young; the deaths acting as catalysts for the respective journeys that would follow. What is more, both sets of brothers have fathers that mysteriously vanished and play pivotal roles in what unfolds. But, in the beginning, the brothers are something akin to orphans united by their brotherly bond and determination. 

FMA is an alchemy fantasy adventure epic which involves lots of early episodic traveling. Supernatural is an episodic road-trip (think FFXV, minus the obvious fujoshi bait). FMA has lighthearted anime humour, whilst Supernatural is goes for gritty realism.  read more

Dennou Coil addpermalink

The "encodes" used in Dennou Coil are very reminiscent of the enigmatic style of alchemy seen in Fullmetal Alchemist.  Interestingly the symbols and patterns, despite being apparently pretty much just magic, are justified as "science" and technology in both series.  Like Fullmetal Alchemist, Dennou Coil is also very much a "coming of age" story that has somewhat darker tones occasionally, especially towards the end.  I would recommend that fans of Fullmetal Alchemist watch an episode or two to see if they enjoy it.

Demon Slayer and FMA have similar character roles and fights against demons but the atmosphere isn’t the same. 

After the death or disappearance of their entire family, the main characters (Tanjirou/Edward) share similar goals, to search for a way to return the body of their younger sibling (Nezuko/Alphonse) to normal. 

(Tanjirou/Edward) fight side by side with their younger sibling (Nezuko/Alphonse) and the bond they share is admired by others such as (Mitsuri/Armstrong) not to mention (Giyuu/Roy) the person who lead the way for them to be what they are in the story(military alchemist/demon slayer) also share some characteristics like being cold but considerate and protective of them.

Both are rather similar to period pieces. While FMA focuses largely on shounen aspects, Gosick airs more closely to the political aspects. Both have elements of suspense and mystery- Gosick specifically is a mystery in itself, but the sense of suspense which pervades throughout the course of both shows is very similar.

Fate/Stay Night and Fullmetal Alchemist are very similar to each other. Both series are about a dark plotline: In FMA, they seek the philosopher's stone because it is said to hold to power to grant wishes without equivalent exchange; in Fate/Stay night, they seek the holy grail, which will grant both master and servant a fulfillment in any desire they wish. Both plotlines have twists and curves you don't see coming, and both end up realizing what they seek isn't all it's cracked up to be. They both focus on solving a certain mystery and to do so the heroes have to explore their world and powers, along with dealing with some very dangerous enemies. Both storylines are quite dark, and contain quite a few plot twists that will keep you guessing about what will happen next. If you like fullmetal, you're bound to like Fate/Stay night. read more

These two series feature fictional worlds that are strongly reminiscent of real historical periods. I wouldn't consider them in the historical genre, but both give off an air of the past. The two main leads in each hold a different kind of power than usually found in fantasy: Lawrence and Holo with bartering skills and Edward and Alphonse with alchemy. By the end of both, however, these characters discover that everything isn't always equal in economics or alchemy and trying to trump the rules of money/trade and equivalent exchange have consequences. Both feature characters trying to "return" - Holo to her homeland after fading as a deity and the Elrics to their bodies after performing the greatest alchemic sin. They show the value of companionship and feature light romance. There is a humorous and entertaining balance between the main duo in each with one being more arrogant and short-fused (Holo and Ed) while the other is calm and reasonable (Lawrence and Al). read more

You might be surprised to find Fullemtal Alchemist and Durarara!!! both much alike. First, they both have a lot of things going on. For example, the overarching plot lines which Durarara and FM did marvelously on. One thing happens and it leads to another, when show does not reveal the character until somewhere throughout the story fills much mystery to the watcher. 

Izaya is an information breaker for Durarara!! that controls his pieces is shown in the first episode has an easy going guy but dangerous as Masaomi Kida puts it for his friend Ryuugamine Mikado who is entirely new to the city. The further you dig into the episode the more twisted it gets and the mystery characters that you didn't know in the beginning start revealing themselves as either friend or foe. I cannot tell you how elaborate the art is, oh how much I ship Izaya and Shizuo. Wait til you meet Shizuo's brother he's like the ideal guy in my dreams.  There's a story in one of the episodes that tells you about the two siblings. So go watch it!

In Fullmetal Alchemist it's similar. The difference is the level of supernatural occurrences happening, Fullmetal has a lot of that: Jumping buildings, a homunculi and missing body parts  .. haha. The show starts out with the Elric boys  each intact somehow in mechanical body parts, a mystery but it later reveals they made a human transmutation to bring back their mother but had failed.
So the tale follows their adventure. A very dangerous one.  read more

This is probably the weirdest recommendation ever, but I think FMA is the most iconic 'dark shounen' that borders on seinen while Nana is the 'darker/realistic shoujo' that borders on josei. The reason both are not actually seinen nor josei is because of the comedy, targeted towards a younger audience. That's why they actually both have fairly diverse fanbases, because they managed to hit the sweet spot for target audience, for better or worse. Just my opinion anyways. Park Romi is the seiyuu for the MCs of both too!

One Piece is similar to Fullmetal Alchemist in not only success, but When it comes to being better than majority of anime and When you are looking for that perfect anime I highly recommend One Piece or Fullmetal Alchemist. Why? Both have amazing plots and The plots go deeper within the character design, Both have amazing story lines, and The graphics of both these anime are spectacular, no horried or flawed design within the many frames, and Overall the soundtracks to both of these anime are great!

Comeback. Fire Force and Fullmetal Alchemist both follow individuals who have lost family in horrendous ways, searching for the next best thing, the answers, around those who passed away.

Fire Force does this with Shinra, after his brother and mother perished in a fire. FMA does this with Ed and Al wanting to resurrect their mother, only to make matters worse by Al losing his body, they go on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone.

Both are great action anime dedicated to the shounen demographic.

These anime are about guys whose only wish is to protect their younger sibling and they use every power they've been blessed with to try to make this happen. They have the power to bend things to their will, in FMA this is matter in general and in Big Order this is people. Their main opponents are other people will similar abilities since their powers are not shared by everyone but are common enough that they have a lot of people to worry about. Both of these anime get quite grim and the protagonist doesn't always get what he wants.

The similarities between FMA and Hitsugi no Chaika are numerous. Both shows are set in an alternative fantasy universe, where a supernatural technique is used in everyday life, as well as in battling bad guys and, most importantly, in warfare. The main character cast is journeying to achieve a goal, even though the exact details of this goal are shrouded in mystery. They are also followed by mysterious side characters that all have their own hidden agendas. Both shows feature a pair of siblings that share a humorous but overall a sweet and a genuine bond. In addition, both of these anime have skillfully balanced the light-hearted and the more serious scenes, as well as the one-episode adventures and the multi-episode chains where the plot progresses fast.

While watching these shows, you feel like you could almost turn them into each other just by changing a few plot points and character designs. I'm not implying that either one is bad or even unoriginal, but that if you enjoyed one then you'll definitely enjoy the other too. read more

Even tho FMA (fullmetal alchemist) and trinity blood have absolutely nothing to to with each other...they both have that fantasy vibe. i think all fantasy lovers would at least love both of these..due to the fact that they are complete opposites..anyhow they are tied in my top favorite anime...please enjoy :D

the main charcters both go on an adventure in search for something
and i also think the twos personallity are very simular.also the main charcters match up some what. Al and coud, Cisqua and winry, Ed and  Rowen you'll notice simularities in the anime. also both of the main characters weapon is a sword that is "attached" to their right arm. both are very nice shonen anime.

Mushishi addpermalink

Both series deal with fictional sciences. One deals with alchemy while the other deals with the study of a fictional phenomenon called "mushi". Ginko, the main character in Mushi-shi, is similar to Edward Elric of FMA in that he is very knowledgable in his respective science. Every episode of Mushi-shi features an interesting and imaginative explanation of the phenomenon of mushi while FMA makes in-depth explorations into the concepts and laws of alchemy.

I found that Kurogane reminded me a lot of Ed with his temper... The plot could be compared to FMA's as well-- the main characters spend the series looking for something, in this case memories in the form of feathers (not as bad as it sounds, I promise!) but they often get distracted by little subplots. Like fma, though, the subplots do not get in the way of the big picture. 

The overall mood of the anime is quite similar. There is some humour in it, but behind that there is darkness and sadness.

Other than the scenes of nudity and the extreme erotic scenes of sucking somas in Seikon No Qwaser, both the Full Metal Alchemist and Seikon No Qwaser contains the common factor that the characters have a supernatural power to manipulate elements, ions, and compounds. Both Full Metal Alchemist and Seikon No Qwaser has these science-fictional elements to stimulate action. 
If the viewers enjoyed (not the perverted scenes) but the actions driven by the chemistry involved in the Seikon no Qwaser, then Full Metal Alchemist the recommended for you.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Kekkaishi are the same in several ways, the only thing that differs them, are the settings, the looks and the theme. Furthermore than that, there are similar characters, battle's and plots going on.

Both anime have lot of humans that get abused/used to succeed with an evil plan in a certain organization with two faces. There are also many chimeras, experiments, humans with different powers and other similarities. If you like adventure and one of them, you may like the other one.

Well, they aren't all that similar in their plots or details, just the fact that they both have action and are shounen.

The reason why I recommend watching Juushin Enbu if you like FMA though, or vice versa, is because both are created by Hiromu Arakawa. So if you like one of her creations, you'll probably like the other.

Both Animes have a sibling bond relationship,Full Metal Alchemist features 2 brothers who committed a sacrifice performing an alchemey and both must get they're original bodies/forms back. Miracle Girls is a slice of life shoujo anime featuring 2 twin sisters who share a sibling bond but sometimes argue and have ESP (Esper powers) to teleport to anywhere. also,both animes's music soundtracks were composed by Michiru Oshima

Both Fullmetal Alchemist and Kurau Phantom Memory contain plenty of both drama and action. The main similarity lies in the fact the the drama is centered around the love between two siblings and their commitment to each other.

they are similar because of Harry MacDougall. Since he turns his whole buddy into a mechanical machine. Kinda like the Elric brothers, but at least they don't wont to blow people up. Also by the fact that they both are searching for something, that they really wont.

Dantalian' and FMA season one are actually quite similar when you read between the lines...

Dantalian:
- A blonde bishounen in the pre-technology age aquires basically access to a load of books, these books feature supernatural secrets; they're grimore's, which basically = alchemy
- This guy's grandad was the collector of all those books
- He is attacked by odd creatures, spawned threw 'alchemy' that can be destroyed using 'alchemy'
- His mother died and his father seems to have dissapeared
- A religious aspect plays out in the background

FMA:
- Blonde bishounen in a pre-technology era aquires research material via hard work, he wants to understand alchemy more
- This boys dad has many books on alchemy
- There are odd creatures swaned threw alchemy that attack during the begining
- The boy's mother died and his dad left
- A religious aspect plays out in the background

Dantalian' even rips off the small family photo with the light shining on it; blocking out the face of someone who'll clearly become more importiant later on. read more

both are similar. In fullmetal alchemist, "to gain something you must pay something in same value". the law of ueki also does have that meaning too. like, Kousuke Ueki from the law of ueki loses sth he has for everytime he uses his power. Apart from that, they both have action, comedy and characters have supernatural powers to begin with. 

oh another thing... both main characters are short & tiny. And hate it when other mentioned it. when that time comes it looks really funny. ^-^

FMA03 and MP100 have one really important thing in common, to me: despite featuring characters with awesome superpowers (and therefore potential for dozens of drawn-out epic fight scenes), they have a pointed focus on the NARRATIVE and EMOTIONAL stakes of each battle rather than the scale or badassery. It's a couple minutes of action framed by hours of context, reflections, trauma, evaluation, etc. What ultimately matters isn't the physical strength or creative abilities of the protagonist, but their reasons for acting the way they do and how they deal with the choices they make.

03!FMA is distinctly less prototypical-shounen-y than the source manga or Brotherhood adaptation, which to me is one of its strongest suits. Battles are incredibly few and far between, and last a couple minutes at maximum because the focus is instead on how the characters react to the conflict.

Mob Psycho 100 is concerned above all else with the mental and emotional state of its ridiculously powerful protagonist; the psychic abilities he wields themselves are entirely secondary to this. The story is about dealing with emotions far more than it is about using psychic powers, and I think it has that in common with 03FMA, which has very few and very intimate conflicts that serve the characters' development, rather than cool grand-scale alchemical duels between stronk dudes.

(Don't expect another Edward, though. If anyone Mob is much more like Alphonse.) read more

Although the genres may seem radically opposed, the atmosphere of both anime is very similiar, with them both being set in a western (not cowboys, i mean european) style atmosphere, main protagonists both struggle with the losses they've suffered and try to cure themselves of grief, each in their own way. I believe the art is similiar as well. To sum up, i personally think the story and genre is the only thing separating those two.

These two series both involves siblings in a strange world where they use their supernatural powers to help others, achieving their goals, and solving problems.

In both series, there is supernatural elements (main characters in FMA uses alchemy while the main characters in ROD uses paper). Both of them requires energy and concentration for them to succeed.

Both series' siblings bonds are dramatic, comedic, emotional, and loving. They all function well as a team and looks after each others' well being. There is good character development in the series also that also focuses on some of the antagonists and supporting characters.

Both series also has action, drama, comedy, and emotional features.

The two guys in this anime aren't exactly related by blood (but they're pretty close), and they are looking for "something" that is quite similar to FMA. Also, the story behind the two guys are similar to FMA as well. You'll love this one =)

Both animes are about a person doing his best to reach their life aim. But if in FMA you can see that all main hero's attempts to do the impossible are futile, in TTGL the main hero does make his dreams come true, whatever obstacles are hindering him from following the way he had chosen. Also, TTGL may become a real source of inspiration for some sensitive personalities. So to conclude, if you liked FMA with all its pathos and surmounting, you'll definetely like TTGL which in addition will place you in no less mesmerizing universe than the one of FMA.

They have the same feel on the sad moments and are both deeply emotional scarring for the characters also it both has such sad moments. Although  Ef feels much more like a very sad dream and FMA feels closer to the harsh reality

In both these anime, there are creepy apparently soulless creatures that are difficult to defeat: the Varuga from Karneval and the Homunculus-type creatures from Fullmetal Alchemist. Also, in both anime, there is a strong bond between the two main characters and a tendency to go from bright and cheerful to very dark.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Case Study of Vanitas have a very similar feel to them. They have a primarily serious plot but sometimes dip into silly/zany territory so it doesn’t feel like it’s taking itself too seriously. They both are fantasy anime that mix supernatural and science together for a unique power. They both also deal with secret evil societies that need infiltrating.

Visually, some of the more supernatural villains are even similar.
